The policeman shouting "on the ground" while constantly pointing a gun at the heroic airman Aaron Bushnell who had set himself alight to protest the genocide in Gaza symbolizes all that is currently wrong with the US, while Aaron Bushnell's tragic sacrifice symbolizes all that the US can be. www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/2/26/suicide-vs-ge…

Bushnell’s extreme act of protest has put Western corporate media to shame.
Surreal: Tate & Lyle finally removes the dead lion from its brand - it's the 21st century after all - but the Church takes offence as the lion was that killed by Samson in the Bible. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13107957/Church-E…
Church of England attacks Lyle's Golden Syrup over rebrand dropping Christian-inspired dead lion logo as firm apologises for upset and is forced to deny religion was reason for switch | Daily Mail Online
For more than 150 years, the logo has been a picture of a dead lion being swarmed by bees, a reference to the biblical story…
Entitled "Courage to Change", the European Green Party Manifesto for the EU 2024 Elections is interesting both in what it includes and what it does not. A lot is common sense and will be welcomed by ecologically-minded voters. But there are some naive (change via tax and spend) and annoying bits such as the agnosticism towards Capitalism (mentioned twice in 47 pages and only in connection with IT "surveillance capitalism" ) the favourable treatment of NATO, fear of Russia and China, no direct mention of Gaza (!), no criticism against rearmament and arm exports by major European countries. Tourism is absent as if it does not greatly affect or is not greatly affected by the Climate crisis. We only learn that the Greens "advocate limits on short-term tourist rentals to keep rents down". Not very imaginative. The whole thing reads as if change is very easy and will be innocuously brought about by some wise Green AI. No more tears. Under pressure from certain powerful green parties the European Greens today constitute the right wing of the Ecological movement, compared to, for example, the US Greens who largely and refreshingly espouse ecosocialism and do not mince their words about Western aggression. As an electoral tactic it may pay off in the short term, however it may cost the European Green Party what's left of its radical green soul. europeangreens.eu/manifesto/ For me, the Party of the European Left present a far more relevant, ecosocialist, agenda. It's 2024 and the DMOs of many tourism-dependent small island states still use women, usually scantily dressed, as props! Is this the type of tourist they are really after?
Tourism (and non-tourism) mega corporations: Stop saving us and start paying! Few really expect corporates to "save the world" or even the so-called "destinations" (actually someone's home) they are active in. If these corporations really wanted to help, rather than pretending to play the role of the government, they could start paying meaningful amounts of local taxes (rather than enjoying local tax holidays, breaks and incentives) and for the often scarce local resources they consume, while not totally destroying the environment and local communities, and - last but not least - offer fair/living wages and humane working conditions to their employees. Of course all of the above should no longer be optional, "an externality", or something for the CSR/ESG report, it should become the law, at least in all self-respecting, non-banana-republic, non-tax-haven, jurisdictions. The "war on drugs": it is hard to say if it is failing or succeeding without examining the real, original motives (meddling and propping up an economic model). A book to help you decide: www.akpress.org/drug-war-capitalism.html
Good to read that tourism is recovering in Sri Lanka after decades of war and the pandemic, however some of the ideas mentioned in the article, such as developing remote islands and airports for the ultra wealthy are not the way to go, if you are to spread the benefits to all. Community-based and owned tourism should be prioritized. www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/12/19/a-nice-feeli…
