Festivals and the City The Contested Geographies of Urban Events

Festivals and the CityFestivals and the CitySmith, A., Osborn, G. and Quinn, B., 2022. Festivals and the City: The Contested Geographies of Urban Events. London: University of Westminster Press.

This book by Andrew Smith, Guy Osborn and Bernadette Quinn (eds.) explores how festivals and events affect urban places and public spaces, with a particular focus on their role in fostering inclusion. It includes case studies from key Western European festival cities, such as Venice, Edinburgh, London and Barcelona, and examines related social and cultural pressures and concerns over the commercialisation and privatisation of public spaces. The book's key themes are the quest for more inclusive urban spaces and the contested geographies of festival spaces and places. The authors also address more general themes including the role of festivals in culture-led regeneration, economic development and place marketing. The book is published by University of Westminster Press, a not-for-profit, diamond open access publisher.

Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development by Sophia Labadi

Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable DevelopmentRethinking Heritage for Sustainable DevelopmentRethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development, Sophia Labadi
ISBN: 9781800081925 - UCL Press

This open access book constitutes a substantial and original assessment of whether and how heritage has contributed to three key dimensions of sustainable development (namely poverty reduction, gender equality and environmental sustainability) within the context of its marginalisation from the Sustainable Development Goals and from previous international development agendas. Sophia Labadi adopts a novel, inclusive, large-scale and systematic approach, providing the first comprehensive history of the international approaches on culture (including heritage) for development, from 1970 to the present day. This book is also the first to assess the negative and positive impacts of all the international projects implemented in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of UN organisations that aimed to provide evidence for the contribution of heritage for development in time for the negotiation of the SDGs. The book’s conclusions provide recommendations for rethinking heritage for development, while reflecting on the major shortcomings of the selected projects. Sophia Labadi is Professor of Heritage at the University of Kent, UK.

New Book: Ecocene Politics by Mihnea Tanasescu

Ecocene PoliticsEcocene PoliticsEcocene Politics is available in Open Access as well as more traditional formats. It is a work of environmental political theory, offering several concepts that can help navigate the ecological loss that is becoming a generalised condition. It develops the idea of Ecocene as a political variant of the Anthropocene, and builds political concepts rooted in ecological science. Anchored in the diverse ecological practices of communities in southern Italy and Aotearoa/New Zealand, this book proposes a restorative ethics of mutualism, an emancipatory theory intended to re-invigorate human agency in the face of contemporary ecological challenges. Using ecology alongside European moral and Māori philosophies to re-conceptualise the ecological remit of politics, this book’s granular approach questions the role played by contemporary political ontologies in the separation of humans and environments, offering an in-depth view of their renewed interrelation under mutualism. Ecocene Politics will be essential to researchers and students in the fields of politics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and geography. It will be of further interest to those working in the fields of political ecology, environmental humanities, and Anthropocene studies, as well as to general readers seeking a theoretical approach to the political issues posed by current ecological crises.

The author, Dr Mihnea Tanasescu is Research Fellow at the Political Science Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

Tourism and refugee-crisis intersections: cocreating tour guide experiences in Leeds, England

Research carried out by Leeds Beckett University found that involving refugees and asylum-seekers in tourism can help them integrate better and can build understanding between communities. The two-year study looked at a group of ten people with refugee or asylum-seeking status, who found themselves in Leeds after fleeing war and persecution in their home countries. In addition, discussions with 10 support workers in the industry and third sector were included in this project.

As part of the tourism venture, Tales of City Tours was set-up by a former Responsible Tourism Management Masters student. Refugees were involved as tour-guides in creating, designing and leading walking tours in the city. They chose the areas they would cover on their tours based on the meaning it had to them.

Antarticness, edited by Illan Kelman (UCL Press)

AntarcticnessAntarcticnessUCL Press is delighted to announce the publication of a new open access book: Antarcticness: Inspirations and imaginaries, edited by Ilan Kelman.

Antarcticness joins disciplines, communication approaches and ideas to explore meanings and depictions of Antarctica. Personal and professional words in poetry and prose, plus images, present and represent Antarctica, as presumed and as imagined, alongside what is experienced around the continent and by those watching from afar. These understandings explain how the Antarctic is viewed and managed while identifying aspects which should be more prominent in policy and practice.

The authors and artists place Antarctica, and the perceptions and knowledge through Antarcticness, within inspirations and imaginations, without losing sight of the multiple interests pushing the continent’s governance as it goes through rapid political and environmental changes. Given the diversity and disparity of the influences and changes, the book’s contributions connect to provide a more coherent and encompassing perspective of how society views Antarctica, scientifically and artistically, and what the continent provides and could provide politically, culturally and environmentally.

Offering original research, art and interpretations of different experiences and explorations of Antarctica, explanations meld with narratives while academic analyses overlap with first-hand experiences of what Antarctica does and does not – could and could not – bring to the world.

Socialising Tourism - Rethinking Tourism for Social and Ecological Justice

Socialising TourismSocialising TourismSocialising Tourism

Rethinking Tourism for Social and Ecological Justice

Edited By Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, Adam Doering, Bobbie Chew Bigby

ISBN 9780367759223
Published July 30, 2021 by Routledge
294 Pages 23 B/W Illustrations

Once touted as the world’s largest industry and also a tool for fostering peace and global understanding, tourism has certainly been a major force shaping our world. The recent COVID-19 crisis has led to calls to transform tourism and reset it along more ethical and sustainable lines. It was in this context that calls to "socialise tourism" emerged (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2020). This edited volume builds on this work by employing the term Socialising Tourism as a broad conceptual focal point and guiding term for industry, activists and academics to rethink tourism for social and ecological justice.

Socialising Tourism means reorienting travel and tourism based on the rights, interests, and safeguarding of traditional ecological and cultural knowledges of local peoples, communities and living landscapes. This means making tourism work for the public good and taking seriously the idea of putting the social and ecological before profit and growth as the world re-emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an essential first step for tourism to be made accountable to the limits of the planet. Concepts discussed include Indigenous culture, toxic tourism, a "theory of care", dismantling whiteness, decolonial tourism and animal oppression, among others, all in the context of a post-COVID-19 world.

This will be essential reading for all upper-level students, academics and policymakers in the field of tourism. The Introduction of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF.
