Ecolodge Member News

Costa Rican Members Genesis II (http://ecoclub.com/genesis) and Laguna del Lagarto (http://ecoclub.com/laguna-del-lagarto) have set up a joint package: The “Cloudforest Highland / Rainforest Lowland Package”. Spend 7 days / 6 nights at Genesis II and La Laguna del Lagarto Lodge, observing birds, canoeing, hiking in the highlands and lowlands of peaceful Costa Rica. Ranweli Holiday Village (Sri Lanka) (http://ecoclub.com/ranweli) has been selected as a Highly Commended Project (Runners up) in the Environmental Experience Category of the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2003. Tourism for Tomorrow Awards recognize organizations in the Tourism Industry that have made a positive contribution towards their local natural and cultural environment. Mr Chandra de Silva, Founder & CEO, has been invited for the awards ceremony to be held on Tuesday 2nd December 2003, at the British Airways Headquarters in Middlesex, UK.

Domitila Reserve and Lodge (Nicaragua) (http://ecoclub.com/domitila) is organising two Natural History events: 1. Butterflies viewing festival at the Dry Tropical Forest. Conducted by: Jean Michel Maes, PhD. Entomology. Dates: 17-21 December, 2003. Cost: US$450.00 per person. Duration: 5 days/4 nights. Included: All meals, round trip, transportation from Managua to Domitila, Bilingual Biologist Guide, Butterflies of Nicaragua CD, native guide, Natural History excursions to Domitila wetlands, National Park Zapatera and Laguna Blanca Lagoon. Not included: soft drinks, beer and wine. Number of participants limited to 6. Deadline: November 20th 2003. Confirmation deadline: December 1st 2003 2. Apani Dhani (Rajasthan, India) (http://ecoclub.com/apanidhani) were invited to participate in the 6 day Forum "FITS" (International Forum for Fair tourism and Sustainable Development, which was held in South-East of France, in September 2003. 

Ecolodge Rendez-Vous (Saba) (http://ecoclub.com/ecolodge-saba) have been featured in The New York Times: Excerpt: “Tiny, mountainous Saba in the Dutch West Indies is home to the Ecolodge Rendez-Vous, built to attract nature lovers, hikers and divers, with 12 simple cottages (with bathrooms), most of which sleep four. Since it opened in August 2002…the Rendez-Vous's Rainforest Restaurant has become popular”. 

El Momo Cottages (Saba) (http://ecoclub.com/elmomo) proprietor Mrs. Angelika Hartleib is coordinating a new initiative to make all hotels on Saba green. Mrs. Hartleib will be the moderator of a new program set up in cooperation with the Caribbean Hotel Association's CAST division (Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism), the Saba Hotel Association and individual hotel managers. Many hotels and households on Saba already practice green ideas with recycling and management of precious rainwater and simple but effective sewage systems. 

Zion Country (Jamaica) (http://ecoclub.com/zioncountry) have been included in The Observer (London UK) as “Best for Wildlife” in Jamaica. Excerpt: “Zion Country, right in the southern reaches of Portland, is mostly known for the family of rare manatees (sea cows) that frolic in the bay it overlooks. Other local attractions include Reich Falls, a series of waterfalls and river pools surrounded by dense forest which is not yet spoilt by mass tourism and the nearby village, Manchioneal, where shacks serving up delicious fresh fish line the road.”

Ms. Laura Ell, (Canada) announces that The Ecotourism Program at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada is conducting an international study of ecotourism consulting.
