New Books
Horn of Plenty, Seasons in an Island Wilderness,
by April Newlin, photographs by Donald Bradburn, University Press of
Mississippi. ISBN1-57806-681-06, cloth, $28.
The author, a clinical psychologist and freelance nature writer, wrote
this - her first - book having spent four seasons on Horn Island, a
captivating barrier island, ten miles off the Missisippi coast, 13 miles
long x 1 mile wide, which enjoys protection as part of the Gulf Islands
National Seashore. "Horn Island rises out of the sea, a wilderness
of slash pine, sea oats and osprey". April Newlin, an award-winning
author, tells the story in a personal, humorous but also well-researched
way. We learn of the islands peculiar history, from how it was named by
French sailors, to being (ab)used during the WW2 as a US Navy test site
for biological agents, subsequently cleaned and restored, and now
visited by some 50,000 annually. The emphasis is on deep nature
appreciation revealing this talented authors psychology background,
however a chapter with practical tourism policy-related recommendations
would have been very useful from such a meticulous observer. Accompanied
by a detailed list of flora and fauna, and a few beautiful black and
white photos by award winning conservation photographer Donald Bradburn.
Perhaps some colour photographs could be added in a future edition to do
justice to this enthusiastic description of a special place. March 2005,
208 pages (approx.), 61/8 x 91/4 inches, 10 b&w photographs, 5 maps,
appendixes, bibliography, index. More information at:
