Pineda, F.D & C.A. Brebbia (Eds), Sustainable Tourism, WIT Press

The Editors were chairmen at the "First International Conference on Sustainable Tourism, 2004." organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, the Inter-University Department of Ecology of Madrid (involving the Universities Complutense, Autónoma and Alcalá) and EUROPARC Espana, in Segovia, Spain, between July 7-9, 2004.

Sustainable Tourism - click to order ! This volume contains many interesting sustainable tourism and ecotourism case studies from around the world, which were presented at the Conference.

Papers are grouped under the headings: Tourism Impact, Tourism Strategies, Sustainable Tourism, Ecotourism, Cultural Tourism, Coastal Issues, Tourism and Protected Areas, Tourism, Infrastructure, Transport and Hotels, Surveys and Analysis, IT in Tourism.

Among the 32 papers, the majority of which are interesting, the following deal with Ecotourism.

Benson A & J. Clifton; Assessing tourism's impacts using local communities' attitudes toward the environment. Studies communities in Indonesia and finds that environmental perceptions differ significantly.

Iiyama, Y & R. Susanti; Community perspectives on ecotourism carrying capacity: case studies from three bordering villages of Kayan Mentarang National Park, Indonesia
Examines the local community's perception of carrying capacity, and concludes, somewhat expectedly, that carrying capacity should be measured & controlled with the participation of the local community.

Meyer-Cech, K; Theme trails and sustainable rural tourism opportunities and threats
Examines networks of attractions in Austria and proposes measures to improve the implementation of theme trails in rural areas, including nationwide coordination, minimum standards and approval / branding schemes.

Alexander, S.E. & J.L. Whitehouse; Challenges for balancing conservation and development through ecotourism: insights and implications from two Belizean case studies
Argues that Belize is undergoing a critical phase of tourism development with some local residents feeling that tourism is destroying village life, and others feeling alienated and resentful of foreign investors in tourism.

Pieterse, G.H.; Ecolabelling at lodges in South Africa
The author, a consultant, concludes, rather determinedly, that a lodge-experience-based ecolabel would be beneficial in South Africa

MacKenzie, B; Ecotourism is good for your health
A refreshing article which explores the relationship between ecotourism development and health in the participating communities, through the provision of education and training, in New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Sakari, M & A. Vahabi; A survey on Afghanistan and Iraq wars effects on the eco-tourism industry in Iran: pilot study in northern Iran
Written by an Iranian official and an academic, who find an (unsurprising) association between the decline in European hunter arrivals to Iran and war in Iran's two neighbours. Title is a misnomer as the article has little to do with ecotourism or sustainable tourism.

Demajorovic, J & F.Z. Antunes; Environmental management in hotels: mitigation of impacts and strategies for eco-efficiency
Presents principal initiatives at the global level, in the Brazilian hotel sector and in one particular Brazilian hotel. Argues that the main motive in all cases are economic efficiency, image of excellence, and meeting certification and classification criteria.

Overall the book presents an exhaustive, if not always coherent, variety of sustainable tourism issues, and is full ideas for students looking for research topics, ideal for case-study hunters, while many articles are practical enough for ecotourism practitioners too. Pity about the high price tag.
