2nd ECOCLUB.com Earth Day Photo Essay Competition now openTo celebrate Earth Day 2007 we are holding the 2nd ECOCLUB.com Earth Day Photo Essay Competition. The first Earth Day was celebrated on March 21, 1970 in San Francisco, United States at the initiative of John McConnell and Mayor Joseph L. Alioto, and was endorsed the following year by the then United Nations Secretary U. Thant, when it became an official UN Day. It has become customary to celebrate the day at the United Nations by ringing the Peace Bell which was donated by Japan in 1954. On March 20 2007, the bell should toll loudly for those leaders who disrespected the environment & world peace, and mark the opening of a hopeful spring. About the Competition: This year's theme is Tourism Rubbish! Or, more politely: "Best practices in Waste Management in Tourism". We welcome photos of positive, innovative examples of management of waste resulting from tourist-related activities. The winner, to be chosen by Member vote, will receive a Gift Voucher for Euros 150, to be used for the purchase of quality ecoproducts. The deadline for submitting photos is March 9, 2007.
