Appendix 2 - ESSL Objectives

The Ecotourism Society of Sri Lanka - Objectives

Ecotourism Society of Sri Lanka (ESSL) was formed on 5th March 1999 as a non- profit organization and functions under the guidance of a Council.

Principal Objectives are :To serve as a "think tank" and an Advisory Body on eco-tourism for the public and private sectors in the development of eco-tourism in Sri Lanka on a planned, scientific basis ensuring sustainable development

Ecotourism is a niche segment of the tourist industry with an emphasis on conservation and welfare of the local people. It is defined as : RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL TO NATURAL AND CULTURAL AREAS THAT CONSERVE THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINS THE WELL BEING OF LOCAL PEOPLE.

The Society has planned a three-pronged programme, which includes:

* Creating awareness through lectures, workshops and seminars for the Travel trade on Ecotourism

* Creating public awareness through public lectures, exhibitions, and use of the media - both print and electronic.

* A medium/long term programme through the schools system - we have conducted an essay competition in 2001 for O/Level and A/Level students on the topic "Tourism and the Environment" as our first activity in this programme.
