Are you looking to gain valuable experience as a nature interpreter? Do you love bugs? Are you looking to spend an amazing summer learning and teaching in one of the world’s most biologically diverse areas? Our 3-month internships might be for you!
The Job:
Runs May-August. You will be trained on-site to deliver 1-hour English tours through our gardens. Once you are trained, you will guide 1-4 tours per day. Other duties include watching front desk, general care and maintenance of the facilities, work in our gardens collecting eggs and caterpillars, helping care for the chickens and tilapia, and also tending to the vegetable gardens. You will work 6 out of 7 days from 8:00am to 4pm.
As you become more experienced you will help to train other volunteers, and participate actively in the care and husbandry of our tropical invertebrate collection. You will also assist in helping the spanish-speaking staff to learn English. Towards the end of your internship, you will have the opportunity to develop your own program for local school children, which will be added to our growing roster of local programming. You will train other volunteers and staff to deliver your program, and implement it with a local school group.
You:
Are outgoing and flexible, and have a positive attitude! A passion for nature and teaching is a must. Some experience in nature education or outreach is preferred for these positions. Spanish is not necessary, though it is always helpful; any other languages are also appreciated. We teach science, and you must be comfortable talking to people about evolution. The Gardens are located in the mountains so a certain level of physical ability is needed, not just for the job but for getting around town!
What You Get:
You will receive modest room and board at The Gardens for the duration of your stay. More importantly, you will receive extensive training in environmental education and outreach, invertebrate husbandry and natural history. You will also get a chance to learn some Spanish and the opportunity to experience one of the most spectacular ecosystems and nicest cultures in the world!
Your day off each week can be spent however you'd like, but exploring the mountains is definitely what we recommend!
Any tips you receive while delivering tours in the gardens are yours (many of our guides make enough for a dinner or two on the town each week).
Our teaching approach is laid back and fun just like our staff, and we want to make sure that you have a good time while here in Costa Rica!
