250 free charging points are already in operation at AB supermarket sites across Greece with 100 more to be developed in the next 3 months.
Under the agreement, the recycling company 'Anakyklosi Syskevon A.E.' will come and collect free of charge old electric and electronic equipment, and ink cartridges and lamps from hotel facilities.
Greek citizens and permanent residents may apply for subsidised holidays in Greece, including accommodation, transport and tours, at www.tourism4all.gov.gr from 5 July 2021. This year's budget is EUR 100 m. which will be allocated to around 600,000 participants through vouchers. To be eligible, your total annual personal income should not exceed EUR 16k or EUR 28k in the case of families (plus EUR 1,500 for each adolescent family member). The subsidy essentially fully covers up to 3 nights of accommodation with a threshold of Euros 40 per person per night. It certainly helps but it should have been at least 3 times as much in order to make a significant impact in tourism destinations trying to recover from a state of shock from the pandemic and with the imminent threat of the Delta variant.
According to reports Germany's Merkel and France's Macron have criticised the governments of Greece and Cyprus for granting entry to travellers vaccinated with "unauthorized vaccines" (i.e. not approved by the European Medicines Agency) such as Russia's Sputnik and China's Sinopharm, as worries about the Delta variant are growing. The irony was that Greece was the first country to propose, along with IATA, an EU-wide Covid vaccination certificate scheme, and this is finally coming into effect from July 1, 2021.
Intrepid Travel has joined forces the the MEET Network Association which focuses on Mediterranean protected areas, to offer tours in Crete, in Samaria Gorge, Sougia and Agios Ioannis villages. The public consultation (dimosia diavoulefsi) for the draft tourism bill “DMOs, Thermal Springs of Greece, Zante Shipwreck, provisions for travel agencies, tourism enterprises and tourist accommodation and other regulations for tourism development” is open until Saturday, June 26 at 2pm. The bill introduces destination management organizations and key initiatives for the effective development of wellness tourism.
UNWTO, the Greek Ministry of Tourism and the University of the Aegean will collaborate in establishing a research station dedicated to measuring the sustainable development of coastal and maritime tourism across the Mediterranean. The new monitoring centre at the University of the Aegean in Greece will capture and collate measurement data and analysis relating to the environmental, economic, and social impact of tourism. The Centre will also enjoy the support of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
SETKE complains that the government continues to exclude small tourist accommodation from the pandemic-emergency support programmes as there is a requirement that such small businesses have employees. SETKE explains that most 7 to 10 room accommodation companies are family-owned thus they are ineligible. Apart from family members, such small companies may typically hire cleaners or gardeners, but unofficially.

The Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) and other environmentalists are celebrating a decision by the General Director of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of Environment and Energy that has halted plans to turn protected islets of the South Aegean Sea, dubbed 'Mediterranean Galapagos", homes to Eleonora's Falcon and many seabirds, into platforms for the erection of hundreds of wind turbines, right at the “heart” of one of the last refuges of biodiversity in Europe. HOS emphasizes that Greece must harmonize its national law with EU legislation and make a pre-screening of the suitability projects in terms of their location mandatory at the very start of the licensing process rather than wait for the Environmental Impact Assessment, prepared by consultants hired by the investors, at a late stage.
A recent decision by the Supreme Labour Council (Anotato Symvoulio Ergasias) means that all Greek Hoteliers have to pay employees a minimum monthly wage of 792 to 863 Euros, according to their occupation, or 740 if they are hired for the first time. The decision extends and makes mandatory the Sectoral Agreement of Hotel Employees to all Hoteliers even if they are not members of the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation.
The Association of Licensed Tourist Guides in Greece held a protest rally outside the Ministry of Labour on 12 May 2021 to protest about the meager state support since the start of the pandemic. According to the Association, each Guide has received EUR 2,936 in total since early 2020. The Guides point out that it is far less than the monthly amount received by employees in all other sectors (EUR 534) even though Tourism is the hardest hit sector.
The developers have leased the old Ottoman-era station of Alykes Kitrous, in Pieria, on the old Athens to Thessaloniki line from GAIAOSE, the public company that manages railway property and rolling stock. The EU-funded project involves the conversion of the station's main building into common areas while seven old wagons will be used as accommodation units. There will be facilities to host events and mosaic and ceramic workshops as well as a plot to grow organic vegetables. A bird observatory will be constructed on the roof of the main building as the station is just 300 metres from the Alykes wetland, part of the Axios Delta National Park, that hosts flamingos year-round.
Within the next four years the municipality of Athens plans to revamp four squares (Agias Eirinis, Agiou Georgiou Karytsi, Agion Theodoron, Ierou Lochou) and pedestrianize many streets in the so called "commercial triangle" in the centre of Athens near the tourist area, roughly between Omonoia and Syntagma squares. The project will cover around 48 acres.
The "Cultural H.ID.RA.N.T." , EU-funded project, undertaken by the Municipality of Chalandri, aims to reveal and preserve this hidden, extensive, largely subterannean Roman-era infrastructure monument (built between 125-140 CE) which brought fresh water to the ancient city of Athens from nearby mountains Parnitha and Penteli. The monument will be as developed as a cultural heritage asset but also reused for irrigation purposes! The project hopes to regenerate 8,500 sq.m. of quality green, public space and create a stronger heritage branding for the periphery of the Athens Metropolitan Area.

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has approved a municipal proposal to regenerate the important archaeological site which borders an industrial area, west of central Athens. The project includes the construction of a new, "Archaeological Museum of Athens".

Kostas Skrekas, Minister for the Environment and Energy, has announced the closure of ten unlicensed landfills and a 1.2m euros reduction in corresponding environmental fines paid to the European Union. Eight of the landfills (in Kythira, Marathon, Andravida-Kyllini, Karystos, Chalkida, Serifos, Paros and Leros) have been 'rehabilitated'/legalised while seven (Kythira, Sifnos, Patmos, Kea, Karystos, Sikinos and Kasos) have been shut down. 50 sites remaining but the ministry's ambitious goal is to avoid all related EU fines by 2022.
Ο Υπουργός Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, Κώστας Σκρέκας ανακοίνωσε την αποκατάσταση 8 ΧΑΔΑ (Κυθήρων, Μαραθώνα, Ανδραβίδας – Κυλλήνης, Καρύστου, Χαλκιδέων/ θέση «Φάρος», Σερίφου, Πάρου και Λέρου) και την παύση λειτουργίας εφτά ΧΑΔΑ (Κυθήρων, Σίφνου, Πάτμου, Κέας, Καρύστου, Σικίνου και Κάσου). Ως αποτέλεσμα το ετήσιο πρόστιμο από την ΕΕ απομειώθηκε κατά 1.200.000 ευρώ. Παραμένουν 50 "υπό εξέταση περιπτώσεις προστίμων" ενώ το υπουργείο έχει θέσει τον φιλόδοξο στόχο να μηδενιστούν τα πρόστιμα μέχρι το 2022.
Greece, like all other EU member states, has until the end of April to submit a plan to the EU outlining how it will spend the €32 billion it will receive in recovery funds to overcome the effects of the pandemic. In a letter to MPs WWF Greece asked them to put pressure to the government so that the national recovery plan excludes activities and projects that have a significant negative impact on the environment including fossil fuel infrastructure, waste incineration, intensive agriculture and fishing.

The Friends of the Railways Association issued a protest against the covering of the historically preserved rail tracks of the 'Moutzouris' steam train in Volos. The Association claims that the Municipality suddenly decided to convert part of the tracks into flower beds without permission from the archaeological service and OSE, the train operator.

29 περιβαλλοντικές οργανώσεις στείλανε επιστολή στον πρωθυπουργό να αποσύρει το Άρθρο 219 του υπο συζήτηση νομοσχεδίου για τις δημόσιες συμβάσεις το οποίο διευκολύνει τα έργα εντός των προστατευομένων περιοχών Natura μέσω της κατάτμησής τους. Οι Πράσινοι και όλα τα κοινοβουλευτικά κόμματα της αντιπολίτευσης είναι επίσης κατά του άρθρου και γενικότερα του νομοσχεδίου που είναι αντίθετο με την Ευρωπαική Πολιτική για τις Πράσινες Δημόσιες Συμβάσεις και ωφελεί τις μεγάλες κατασκευαστικές και μελετητικές εταιρείες.
29 environmental organizations sent an urgent appeal to the Prime Minister calling for the withdrawal of Article 219 of a draft bill of the Ministry of Development and Energy which facilitates development within natural areas designated as European Natura 2000 protected areas. The Greens and all parliamentary parties of the opposition are also against this article and the bill in general which totally goes against the spirit of EU Green Public Procurement directives and favours big development and consultancy companies.

Spyros Pateras, the new President and CEO of OSE, the Greek train operator, informed Capital.gr that the organization's priorities include the use of steam trains and historic wagons to develop special tourist services in Kalavryta, Olympia, Pelio and the Nestos delta. OSE will also develop photovoltaic and solar energy parks on OSE-owned land so as to be 100% powered by renewable energy sources.
O πρόεδρος του Τουριστικού Οργανισμού Πελοποννήσου κ. Κωνσταντίνος Μαρινάκος, έστειλε επιστολή στην Ρυθμιστική Αρχή Ενεργείας (ΡΑΕ) στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου 2021 τονίζοντας ότι οι εργασίες για εγκατάσταση ανεμογεννητριών στη Ζήρεια, θα προκαλέσουν μη αναστρέψιμη καταστροφή του τοπίου και του φυσικού οικοσυστήματος, αλλά και μη αναστρέψιμο πλήγμα στην τοπική οικονομία και στις προοπτικές του αειφορικού τουρισμού. Στις 25 Ιανουαρίου ο οργανισμός είχε στείλει ανάλογη επιστολή στη ΡΑΕ για το Μαίναλο.

Τhe President of the Peloponnese Tourism Organization, a DMO, sent an official complaint to the Greek Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) on February 12, 2021 stressing that the installation of wind turbines in Ziria mountain will cause irreversible destruction to the landscape, the natural ecosystem, the local economy and to sustainable tourism prospects. The DMO had sent a similar complaint to RAE about Mt. Mainalo on 25 January 2021.

POEET, the Union which represents employees working in Greece's large Tourism and Leisure sector, currently in lockdown since early November 2020, protests the meagre and patchy support provided by the Ministry and explains that tourism and restaurant workers are unable to survive unless the state fully covers their wage. Currently, the state offers a Euros 534 monthly benefit to some, Euros 400 to others, and yet many receive nothing as they fail to meet the conditions and requirements.

Sea DiamondΚοντεύουν 14 χρόνια από το ατύχημα και την ύποπτη βύθιση του κρουαζιερόπλοιου Sea Diamond στην Σαντορίνη. Μια Ευρωπαϊκή Υπηρεσία Περιβάλλοντος με δόντια θα είχε ήδη ανελκύσει το τοξικό ναυάγιο και θα είχε εισπράξει τα χρήματα από τα πρόστιμα στους εμπλεκομένους... Αντ'αυτού περιμένουμε πότε θα κυλήσει το ναυάγιο στην άβυσσο! Οι Πράσινοι καλέσανε την Κυβέρνηση να ενεργήσει προτού είναι αργά.

Nearly 14 years have passed since the accident and the controversial sinking of the Sea Diamond cruiseship in Santorini. Had a powerful European Environment Agency existed, it would
have already lifted the sunken ship using the funds from the fines it would have imposed on all those responsible. Instead, we are just waiting for the toxic wreck to slip deep into the abyss. The Greek Greens are now calling the government to act before it is too late.

Απάντηση (1/3/21) του Υπουργού Ναυτιλίας & Νησιωτικής Πολιτικής σε ερώτηση στη Βουλή για το θέμα:
«Η υπόθεση του ναυαγίου του κρουαζιερόπλοιου SEA DIAMOND στην Σαντορίνη αποτελεί ζήτημα μείζονος ενδιαφέροντος, η επιτυχής έκβαση του οποίου συνιστά πρωταρχικό σκοπό». Πρόσθεσε, ωστόσο, ότι για το συγκεκριμένο ναυάγιο υπάρχει μια πορεία μακρόχρονων διοικητικών και δικαστικών εξελίξεων, οι οποίες βεβαίως δεν έχουν ακόμα ολοκληρωθεί. Από την πρώτη μέρα του ναυαγίου μέχρι και σήμερα το Υπουργείο Ναυτιλίας και Νησιωτικής Πολιτικής και το αρμόδιο Λιμεναρχείο Θήρας έχουν εκδώσει πάνω από εξακόσιες αποφάσεις και έχουν επιβληθεί πρόστιμα συνολικού ύψους 8.238.094 ευρώ. Αναφορικά με την απόφαση του Συμβουλίου της Επικρατείας τόνισε ότι την σχετική αρμοδιότητα υλοποίησης νόμου περί ναυαγίων, κατ’ αρχήν την έχει το Δημοτικό Λιμενικό Ταμείο Θήρας, αλλά επίσης ανήκει παραλλήλως και στην κεντρική διοίκηση ως αυτοτελής υποχρέωση. Επίσης, ανέφερε ότι έχει συσταθεί ομάδα έργου από ανώτατα στελέχη της Γενικής Γραμματείας Λιμένων και Λιμενικής Πολιτικής και Ναυτιλιακών Επενδύσεων και στελέχη του Λιμενικού Σώματος, προκειμένου να εξετάσουν και να διατυπώσουν άποψη στο τριμελές Συμβούλιο Συμμόρφωσης του Συμβουλίου της Επικρατείας για τις δύο πραγματογνωμοσύνες, οι οποίες έχουν διενεργηθεί δυνάμει των αποφάσεων 51/2017 και 373/2018 του τριμελούς Εφετείου Πειραιώς, καθώς και να παρακολουθήσουν όλες τις απαιτούμενες ενέργειες, οι οποίες θα προκύψουν και αφορούν την ανέλκυση του συγκεκριμένου ναυαγίου και το αμέσως επόμενο χρονικό διάστημα να καθοριστούν οι τεχνικές λεπτομέρειες ανέλκυσης του συγκεκριμένου ναυαγίου και το πραγματικό οικονομικό κόστος. "
