Germany: World's first hydrogen train service inaugurated near Hamburg

Added 2022-08-26

Description

The €93 million French-German project led by Alstom involved designing 14 'Coradia iLint' trains that will serve 100 km of track near Hamburg. The trains are fuelled up with hydrogen, gather oxygen from the atmosphere, and a fuel cell turns hydrogen and oxygen into electric current. Although just water vapor and heat are emitted it is not really zero-emissions yet as grey rather than green hydrogen is used, and that is produced from coal and gas.
