Germany: Frankfurt becomes first German city to celebrate Ramadan with street illuminations

Added 2024-03-06

Description

Frankfurt, a major European financial centre, seat of the European Central Bank and one of Germany's most multicultural cities, will switch on celebratory Ramadan lights for the first time this Sunday (10 March 2024), following a decision by Green Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg supported by the municipal government coalition (Green Party, Social Democratic Party, Free Democratic Party, and Volt) in honor of the 15% of the city's population who are Muslims and to support peace and human brotherhood in this time of crises and wars. The decision was also inspired by similar lights in London. As expected, racists blasted the decision as a "capitulation" to Islam, while the Christian Democratic Union criticized the use of public funds. But Iranian-born Mayor Dr. Eskandari-Grünberg is used to such reactions, having been the target of neo-nazi abuse since 2008 over the construction of mosques in Frankfurt. Hopefully more countries across the European Union will soon follow Frankfurt's example and celebrate all religions, along with secularism and atheism/agnosticism, of course.
