The government may limit or ban certain universities from accepting foreign students while a "genuine student test" will be introduced. Visa policies for students had been relaxed by the previous government during the immediate post-pandemic era, allegedly to alleviate labour shortages and they have led to a record numbers of new students from India, China and the Philippines in particular. In June 2023, the Labor government extended the maximum eligible age for its 3-year working holiday visa to UK nationals to 35, from 30 previously. Australia has working holiday visa agreements with 47 countries most of which are reciprocal.
