The presence of a dozen Chinese policemen in the island at the invitation of the local authorities, following a similar decision by the Solomon Islands in 2022, has provoked the ire of the United States who is warning other Pacific islands under its sphere of influence. In a not so unrelated development, the US Coast Guard (repeat, US Coast) has boarded Chinese vessels near Kiribati for alleged illegal fishing activities. It seems more countries want to play policeman these days.
