Despite local environmental opposition, and thanks to a 28-year EIB loan for a third of its Eur 520m cost, work will soon start for the new airport and connecting highway at the plain of Kasteli, 30km south-east of Heraklion. It will replace the current "Nikos Kazantzakis" airport which served 8m passengers in 2019 and uproot some 200,000 olive trees...There is a hearing in Greece's High Court on 7 February 2020 as a result of last ditch environmentalist attempts to block the project.
