The mayor of Poros, Ioannis Dimitriadis, who in recent years led a legal fight against a government-backed expansion of sea-polluting fish farms on the island, welcomed the announcement as a historic event. The opposition and environmental organizations were quick to point out the hypocrisy of a government keen on oil and gas drilling on the mainland and the Aegean.
