Greece: Imprisonment with 3-year suspension for Athens Zoo Owner for illegal shows with Dolphins

Added 2024-05-21

Description

Following a lawsuit by members of Oikologiki Symmaxia (Ecological Alliance), a regional-level green political group in Attica, and various environmental NGOs, the Athens Court of First Instance handed down a 6-month prison sentence with 3-year suspension to the owner of the Attica Zoological Park for dolphin shows conducted between 2016-2020. These shows were illegal, as all shows involving animals including "educational" ones, according to Greek law 4039 of 2012. The Zoo failed to convince the court that it was just letting visitors observe the dolphins being fed and doing exercises.
