Peru: Machu Picchu daily visitor cap raised by 10%

Added 2023-12-15

Description

From 1 January 2024, 4,500 visitors per day (and up to 5,600 on special days) will be allowed entry in an evident attempt by the conservative government of Dina Boluarte to prioritize revenue over conservation. The iconic Inca citadel recently marked its 40th anniversary as a UNESCO site but international visitor numbers at both the site and the country as a whole have dwindled due to political unrest. At least 30 protesters were lethally shot by the army in January 2023 following the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo by Peru's Congress, while Boluarte has not yet been recognised as Peru's President by many neighbouring countries.
