Greece: Culture Ministry protests British Museum's abuse of Parthenon Sculptures as Fashion show backdrop

Added 2024-02-18

Description

The latest episode in the saga of marbles-connected British-Greek spats, it follows the last minute cancellation by the British PM of a meeting with the Greek PM in November 2023. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni issued a strong protest against the "trivialization" of the universal values represented pointing out that "the conditions of display and storage of the sculptures...are constantly deteriorating". Ironically the fashion show by Turkish-British designer Erdem Moralıoğlu, held during London Fashion Week, in front of the infamous marbles (originally sown of/stolen from Athens' Parthenon temple by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century), was supposedly inspired by and paid homage to the dresses worn by Greek opera diva Maria Callas. But even looking at the pictures and videos from the fashion show one feels that it is a case of 3 in 1: commodification/objectification of women, cultural heritage and museums.
