The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) awarded 70 Dubai hotels, out of 278 applications, with the three-tier (Gold, Silver, Bronze) Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) Stamp. These large city hotels may indeed be making efforts to lower their environmental impacts, however, beyond green image-making, the question remains how sustainable (environmentally, economically, socially, politically) is a destination known for its extravagant developments, and oil-fueled non-stop growth rather than for its labour practices or human rights record.
