In a region where positive news are in very short-supply, and following over 100 years of efforts, the World Health Organization has certified Egypt as malaria-free. Egypt becomes the 44th country to be officially free from the disease that kills over 600,000 people every year, with Nigeria accounting for over a quarter of infections. Recent trends show a geographical shift of malaria, possibly linked to climate change, resulting in both a spread and a decline of the disease in different countries.
