Brazil: Illegal goldmining causes severe health crisis in Yanomami territory

Added 2022-12-22

Description

A new report by investigative news agency Agencia Publica, reveals the full extent of a malnutrition-related health crisis in the Yanomami territory caused by a massive invasion of illegal goldminers. Survival International’s Director of Research and Advocacy Fiona Watson, who has worked with the Yanomami for more than thirty years, said that the crisis is unprecedented, as Yanomami forests are bountiful and that it was stoked by the Bolsonaro administration which encouraged the mass invasion and destruction of Yanomami's lands by goldminers. Watson called upon the incoming Lula administration to 'act immediately to prevent the Yanomami from being wiped out'.
