The gps tracking devices will become mandatory from spring 2024 onwards following last year's climbing season, one of the busiest and deadliest, with 8 foreign visitors and 9 Sherpa guides dead or missing. Despite overtourism and safety concerns, a record number of climbing permits, 454, were issued in Spring 2023.
