Finland: Inspections reveal poor treatment of foreign tourism workers in Lapland

Added 2024-04-30

Description

Following a deadly snowmobile accident, a regional state agency inspected 17 tourism companies and found evidence of foreign workers working an excessive amount of hours without overtime payment, especially during the peak Christmas period, and without occupational healthcare. There are even allegations that an award-winning operator threatened foreign workers with visa revoking if they kept complaining! Finnish Lapland, including its regional capital Rovaniemi is a popular tourism destination mainly thanks to Santa Claus and Northern Lights-related tourism. Residents born abroad now account for 6% of the population.
