China: Some countries update travel advisories for Hong Kong following introduction of national security law

Added 2024-03-24

Description

Following the passage of the "Safeguarding National Security Ordinance" by Hong Kong (China SAR) authorities on 23 March 2024, Australia, Britain and Taiwan urge their citizens visiting the region to exercise caution, claiming they could be detained without charge and denied lawyer access, while the US has also expressed deep concern. Local and central Chinese authorities have dismissed such criticisms and advisories as fact-twisting and scaremongering. International visitor numbers to the city are still well below pre-pandemic numbers. Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, enjoys one of the highest life expectancies while being one of the most densely populated areas in the world and a major international financial hub. It became a British colony in 1842 following the defeat of China at the First Opium War and was returned to China in 1997.
