India: Strategic, world's longest, tunnel completed near Chinese border

Added 2024-03-09

Description

Indian PM Modi inaugurated Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh situated at an altitude of 4,000 m. Touted as the "world’s longest twin-lane tunnel", the EUR100m (INR825 crore) tunnel took 5 years to be completed. It provides all weather access to Tawang town, historically a part of Tibet, occupied by India in 1951 and still claimed by China. Let us hope that, regardless of any original intent, the tunnel may reduce tensions along the border, and facilitate trade and tourism between India and China.
