Cyprus: Heavily reliant on Russian & Ukrainian visitors, tourism sector seeks alternatives

Added 2022-03-02

Description

Cyprus, which has followed the other 26 EU Members in shutting its airspace to Russian airlines, is bracing as Russians amounted to about a quarter of all tourists in 2019, and 40% in 2021. Their absence, along with that of the Ukrainians which were a rapidly growing segment, may translate to a 2% drop in the island nation's GDP according to the Transport Minister. Some areas like Larnaca, and Limassol, popular with Russian investors, may be more affected, compared to Pafos which mainly attracts British tourists. Reacting to the flight ban, the Russian Ambassador to Cyprus stated that the island 'has shot itself in the foot'. A Foreign Ministry representative hinted that Cyprus may revise its decision.
