A revised hunting law, that may be in breach of the Bern convention according to environmentalists, will allow the cull of over 30 wolves during December 2023 and January 2024. A direct popular vote in 2020 had narrowly rejected a wolf cull although a majority had voted in favour in Valais canton. The population of wolves in Switzerland is estimated to be around 300. Sweden and Norway have also performed wolf culls in recent years.
