The decision, if fully implemented, will be a major victory for indigenous people and biodiversity and also safeguard the uncontacted tribes of the Tagaeri, Taromenane and Dugakaeri living in the border between Ecuador and Peru. It is also a defeat for outgoing president Guillermo Lasso. Yasuni was designated a Unesco World Biosphere Reserve in 1989.
