Africa Alarmed by the dwindling numbers of its rare species of fish (locally known as chambo), owing to over-fishing, the Malawi government has formulated a 10-year plan to restore the fish in Lake Malawi, and its largest outlet, the Shire River. DeBeers, the South African Diamond producers will invest around 50 million Rand in developing a tourist attraction at the Big Hole well before diamond extraction in the area is exhausted. Hopes are to develop a World Heritage site. A total of eight South African beaches will be awarded the Blue Flag- for meeting fourteen criteria ranging from water quality to access for the disabled. SA's participation in Blue Flag has changed the exclusive European character of the campaign. The flag is awarded on an annual basis and is only valid for one year. Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) announced the first four 'South African tourism businesses to be awarded its groundbreaking trademark. The four businesses, Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve (Mpumalanga), Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge (Limpopo), Stormsriver Adventures (Eastern Cape) and The Village at Spier Hotel and Conference Centre (Western Cape), are the first in the world to be certified for their work in promoting Fair Trade in tourism. Southern Right whales are making an impressive comeback in the waters of South Africa. The mammals were pushed to the brink of extinction by whaling until protections were put in place in 1935. Whale watching from villages along South Africa's coast is considered particularly eco-friendly because no boats are needed; the animals can be seen in action from the shore.
