Germany: Environmental NGO sues TUI Cruises for greenwashing

Added 2024-02-22

Description

NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), which has taken legal action against many Germany companies advertising their goods as climate-neutral", has also sued cruise operator TUI Cruises for "greenwashing" in relation to its advertised aims of "CO2-neutral" cruising by 2050, through the use of green methanol and other green(er) fuels. DUH believes there is no evidence whatsoever that such fuels will be produced in sufficient quantities by 2050 so this is misleading advertising. In a statement, TUI Cruises argue the lawsuit is unfounded and promise to pursue their climate protection strategies. Since 1 January 2024, European shipping companies are legally obliged to purchase certificates (from the European Energy Exchange) for 40 percent of emitted emissions and this percentage will rise to 100% by 2026.
