In the press release GSTC clarifies that the recognition 'refers to the system itself' and the set of standards it uses. It does not cover the process of certification or accreditation of the (Travel Sustainable) programme, that is, the "formal verification that a certification body operates in a competent and neutral manner according to international standards". The programme does not currently include verification of green claims through an independent field audit and is based on information provided by the accommodation owner. Booking.com’s Travel Sustainable programme was also recently a winner in Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas Awards, out of more than 2,000 entries.
