Usually, the (often greenwashed, social-washed) mega-donor has already committed to a fixed amount, so the trick involves convincing you to back the cause since such a serious patron is behind it and has apparently checked its legitimacy, while you must also contribute by a fixed (fake) imminent deadline because otherwise the glorious donor will supposedly ignore your meagre contribution rather than double it - quelle horreur! Since this old trick is alive and well it means enough 'consumers' still consume it. Suggestion: choose crowdfunding, it is a lot more transparent and democratic.
