Athens, Greece - 24 June 2008
Interviewed by ECOCLUB.com, destination management Manolis Psarros, former Tourism Development Director at the Athens tourism board, reviews the tourism legacy of the Athens Olympics, the impact of the December 2008 unrest in Athens, and greek tourism policy at the central and local level. According to Psarros Greece is facing stiff competition from new destinations, and it was time for Greek tourism to "move from central administration models to local or regional decentralised administration systems & policies" by establishing locally-managed destination management organisations. The new land use plan for tourism, recently passed by the government, although necessary, does not define zones in a strict way, and "in practice, provides space for uncontrolled tourism development".
