Ecuador: Siekopai nation regains ownership of ancestral homeland

Added 2023-12-02

Description

A historic court decision has granted the Siekopai title to 42,360 hectares and the right to return to Pë’këya, their ancestral lands from where they were expelled in 1941. Their territory is within a protected area at the border with Peru and one of the most biodiverse areas on earth. The court has also obliged the Environment Minister to apologize publicly to the Siekopai in a public ceremony. Today there are about 2,000 Siekopai, split between Ecuador and Peru.
