In January 2023 an attack on a tourist boat cruising the Jozini Dam by 'armed bandits' followed the killing of over 25 elephants by poachers who cut their tusks. Willagers have vowed, according to the Daily Maverick, to kill elephants, whose population has grown in recent years, to protect their livestock, while lodge managers report heavy nightly gunfire.
