Congo (DRC): French government stops funding of Kahuzi-Biega National Park citing human rights violations

Added 2023-08-02

Description

According to French Minister of State for Development, Francophonie & International Partnerships, Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, funding stopped "in line with our requirement for the respect of human rights". Survival International, which along with Minority Rights Group has documented and exposed 'organized violence by park rangers' against the Indigenous Batwa, expressed dismay at the German government's ongoing funding of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, an exceptional habitat of the rainforest and the eastern lowland gorillas, and a UNESCO "World Heritage Site in Danger" since 1997.
