US: Bears Ears National Monument to be co-managed by Native American Tribes and Federal Agencies

Added 2022-06-22

Description

A 'landmark' cooperative agreement to manage the Bears Ears National Monument was signed between the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Commission: the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, and the Pueblo of Zuni. The federal agencies will provide resources while the five Tribes will apply their traditional knowledge to natural and human-caused ecological challenges, drought, erosion and visitor impacts. The monument is sacred to many Native American Tribes who use the area for traditional and ceremonial uses.
