Mindo, Ecuador - 13 June 2009
Septimo Paraiso (Web: www.septimoparaiso.com), an ECOCLUB Ecolodge Member has recently completed the construction of an Ethnic Rescue Centre in Mindo, a small community near the Pichincha Volcano in Ecuador. The project was partly-funded through the 2008 ECOCLUB.com Ecotourism Awards. Since a new motorway was built about 10 years ago, Mindo has suffered an immigrant influx, with locals outnumbered and the local Yumbo and Inca culture and traditions disappearing fast . The "Ethnic Rescue Center" expected to be inaugurated in August 2009, will allow a constant exhibition of the past, present and future of this new diverse community and furthermore start analyzing the ecological footprint of this area, as well as generate job opportunities. The 150 m2 Centre has been constructed from container wood, zinc from old containers, old tires and other recyclable materials and aims to be a plastic-free zone.
