An electrifying exhibition at Athens' top green attraction
If in Athens this summer, do not miss a rare Takis exhibition at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC, https://www.snfcc.org/en) in Kalithea, in itself a green attraction as a multi-award winning, public urban regeneration and cultural project with exciting happenings, olive groves, herb gardens and a breathtaking 360 view of Athens and Faliro bay. Experience an open-air exhibition of 46 representative works (sculptures) by Takis (Panayiotis Vassilakis 1925-2019 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panayiotis_Vassilakis) a famed, self-taught Greek sculptor who lived and worked in France, and who pioneered 'kinetic' art that celebrated renewable energy sources. The one shown the picture, titled "Electric Barrels", is a photovoltaic art installation (2012) on top of empty oil barrels which, according to the knowledgeable SNFCC guide (free guided tours daily at 19:00, book online at https://www.snfcc.org/en/Takis/Tours) is also a fully functional, light, easy to install, move and reinstall, power generator suitable for household or agricultural use - more on the barrels at https://takisfoundation.org/electric-barrels/. In the background, behind Takis' barrels, you can see the huge Renzo Piano roof (100 x 100 metres) which also produces energy, as it is fully covered with solar panels. It produces 3 GWh per year, covering the needs of the SNFCC (LEED-certified Platinum in 2016) and also provides extra power to the municipality of Kalithea.
