Burlington, VT, United States - 17 March 2010
The University of Vermont is pleased to announce a new course, "Global Sustainable Ecotourism Development: Achieving Economic Growth, Alleviation of Poverty, and Environmental Conservation. As part of UVM's Leading & Managing for Sustainability summer program, this course will convene in Burlington on
July 12-16, 2010, and will focus on the effects of tourism on ecologically fragile areas and approaches to delivering low-impact development. It will explore the roles of governments and international donors and teach a holistic approach to sustainable planning and development of rural tourism. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their professional networks, while learning from leaders in the field at UVM's award-winning green campus.
The course will be conducted by Megan Epler Wood, founder and past president of The International Ecotourism Society. Ms. Epler Wood is a 20-year veteran of the Ecotourism movement, who helped to define and pioneer the field that exists today. Ms. Epler Wood says, "I have launched the Global Sustainable Ecotourism course at University of Vermont to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), which was the first organization in the world fully dedicated to developing the tools and guidelines for developing ecotourism as a sustainable development tool. This course takes advantage of the many years I have dedicated to this field since founding TIES in 1990."
