Stitching our Stories in Luang Prabang, Laos

Stitching our Stories in Luang Prabang, Laos
We are excited about a new project to empower minority women to share their stories through photography, interviews, and video.  In November, TAEC finished the first phase of the project with our partner, PhotoForward.  The participants, primarily young Hmong women from the night market, were given cameras, taught basic photography skills, and then asked to document women at work in their communities. The results were insightful and showed the strength of women in Lao society.  We celebrated the women’s creativity and hard work by exhibiting their photographs and embroidery at Children’s Cultural Centre.  To view their images, visit the online gallery at http://www.photoforward.org/women-at-work.html   We are now in the second phase of this project, working with a smaller group of women to further develop their photography skills and introduce them to basic research techniques.  The women have been exploring topics of their choosing, from shamanism and polygamy, to single parenthood and...

Visit the Toledo Cacao Festival, Belize 24-26 May

Visit the Toledo Cacao Festival, Belize 24-26 May
The Toledo Cacao Festival was born in 2007 and has been celebrated each year on the same Commonwealth Day weekend towards the end of May. It attracts hundreds of visitors from around Belize as well as overseas. In 2013 the festival falls on the weekend of 24-26 May.   This lively festival has helped Toledo shed its worn out image as “the forgotten district” and establish it as one of Belize’s vibrant and growing tourism destinations. It also celebrates the tremendous contribution to development in the south made by the Toledo Cacao Growers’ Association (TCGA) and its hundreds of farmer members.   The Toledo Cacao Festival worked well as a name within Belize but many people do not understand the story that links cacao to cocoa and chocolate, which in the end is the real attraction. Likewise Toledo, Spain and Toledo, Ohio are better known internationally than Toledo, Belize. So this...

A century of peaceful revolutions from below?

A century of peaceful revolutions from below?
While (and perhaps because) geopolitics are getting messier each year in the post cold war era, it is the grassroots, empowered and emancipated by information and communications improvements that may take humanity a long way forward during this century.   Here are two random, seemingly unrelated, developments, we spotted today:    The reopening as worker-run of an, abandoned by its owners, metal factory, "Viomihaniki Metaleftiki" factory is taking place today 12 February, in Thessaloniki, Greece. In a country where unemployment has already climbed at 30% following the austerity, neoliberal policies imposed by IMF and the EU., such are obvious and necessary solutions.     And the discovery of a simple-to-use method for diagnosing cancer , which costs just 3 cents (and may continue to do so unless/until big pharma get their hands on it), by 15 year Jack Andraka old who following the sudden death of a close family friend...

Kalsee Eco Lodge & soroundings

Hi,   After several years in tourism as tour operator, I found tourism makes changes in the world. Since last year we are constructing Eco lodge in Tanchowk-3, Lumle, Kaski, Nepal with partnership of local land owners and community.    Each year young people are moving to abroad like middle east,  to find job since there is no job available in the countryside in the villages. After they have little money they move to cities for better. But these kind of migration and movements has created social and economic difficulties in the country. To address these kind of issues we have just trying to create few jobs for local youths  constructing eco-lodge so that they keep their villages alive.   Our short mission and project highlights listed in our web page. http://egtours.com/Kalsee_Eco_Lodge_Project.php   Our eco lodge site is perfectly located to view Mt Annapurna range in one side and other side...
