Description
Tourists staying overnight in all types of accommodation in Edinburgh will now be charged an additional 5% by accommodation providers who will pass it on to the city council. The charge is capped at five nights and will remain the same throughout the year. The City of Edinburgh Council estimates that the charge will raise around £50m annually. Business representatives such as UKHospitality, the National Farmers’ Union, and Airlines UK have protested.
The Scottish Greens have urged councils across Scotland to follow Edinburgh’s lead and consider introducing a visitor levy to help fund vital local services such as schools, libraries and housing. Edinburgh’s Green councillors have led calls for such a levy in Scotland’s capital since 2011. Edinburgh has now joined other European destinations that charge a tourist tax, including Amsterdam, Paris and Rome, as well as Manchester, where a Visitor tax was introduced in 2023 by the then Mayor, now PM, Andy Burnham.
