UK: VisitScotland closing information centres to focus on online promotion

Added 2024-03-29

Description

VisitScotland has announced that they will gradually close their network of brick-and-mortar information centres by March 2026 explaining that as people now plan their holidays online there has been a fall in demand for the "iCentres". Visit Scotland will now investing in a "digital-first strategy". While it is accurate that online bookings are now dominant, and that shutting down physical information centres can save costs, one wonders if such old-style tourism information centres around the world could be revamped so as to provide extensive and focused information in a more exciting and interactive way to discerning travellers and/or be converted into tourism sustainability centres, with related events and training for tourism practitioners.
