Russia: Club employees arrested as "LGBT movement" added to 'extremists' list

Added 2024-03-25

Description

Following a November 2023 Supreme Court of Russia decision that LBGT activists are extremists, financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring, has added the “international LGBT movement” to its terrorists and extremists list. This means that bank accounts deemed linked can be frozen without a court order. Two gay club employees were also arrested last week, following complaints by a nationalist group, according to Amnesty International. The climate for gay people in Russia started visibly deteriorating in 2013 when a law entitled "For the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating a Denial of Traditional Family Values" was unanimously passed.
